The world’s first clean coal project involves retrofitting the existing Callide A Power Station to enable oxy-fuel combustion and carbon dioxide capture. The project has the potential to demonstrate how existing coal fired power stations could be adapted to produce almost zero emissions electricity.
Aurecon provided owner’s engineer services including assistance with project, contract and technical management, partial design review, technical advice and quality assurance inspections and construction monitoring on site.
The project required the design, supply, construction and commissioning of boiler modifications, oxygen production and carbon dioxide capture plants and other auxiliary equipment. Implementation was through a multi-contract project delivery approach with five different main contractors. Aurecon provided an experienced team to assist COSPL to implement the multiple contracts, including a team on site during the construction period.
Capturing carbon dioxide emissions from coal fired power stations and safely storing underground, can significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere. This project aims to demonstrate how this technology can be applied to the many coal fired power stations in Australia and worldwide.
